Papaver rhoeas is known by many other names, including corn poppy, Flanders poppy and Shirley poppy. It is a red, four-petaled, annual flower with a black center whose blooms typically begin in late spring. The flowers and seeds are edible and the plant is used medicinally for a variety of purposes. Similar to the peony, the corn poppy is a symbol of agricultural fertility. It is also a military symbol for veterans of World War I who fought in fields populated by the flower.
