Description

Also known as Anise hyssop or Licorice mint, agastache foeniculum is the hardiest of species of fifteen its genus. This perennial has long-lasting fragrant flowers that are attractive to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds, which will help pollinate your garden. The plants typically reach about 2-3 feet in height and are ideal for flower beds. It prefers a somewhat dry soil in full to partial sun and does not require fertilization. It is a good choice for cut flowers and potpourri. Possessing a sweet anise-like flavor, the raw or cooked leaves are used as a flavoring, added to salads or used for tea. It has reportedly been used by a number of Native American tribes such as the Cheyenne, Cree and Chippewa. A poultice of the leaves has been used traditionally to treat burns, while the tea has been used for colds and fevers. Many sources also consider it a cardiac tonic and a stimulant.

Growing Information: This species is easy to grow. Sow seeds on the surface of moist soil or mix with fine, loose soil and scatter outside as soon as the danger of frost has passed. Seeds may also be started in a green house or indoors for an earlier start. Optimal germination occurs at about 60-70 degrees Fahrenheit. This plant will grow well in most garden soil. Keep in a sunny to partial sunny position.
