Established sugar cane multiplies rapidly by sending out new shoots from the base. Sugar cane will grow outdoors year-round in zones 9 and up, but you can grow in zone 8 with protection and anywhere else by bringing it in for the winter months. Cover the base with a thick layer of mulch, even up to several feet thick for added frost protection. They are said to be hardy to about 20 degrees Fahrenheit, and a good layer of mulch, especially one that is warmed by active decomposition, can help keep your roots warm even past an air temperature of 20 degrees. You can also grow them in big containers if you need to move them indoors. A 50/50 mix of potting soil and perlite will help keep big pots light for moving, so long as you keep them well watered in the hot months.
