Psychotria carthagenensis is most closely related to psychotria alba. The two are commonly confused to the point that we’ve seen people debate whether they are a separate species. They are. One can distinguish carthagenensis as being rounder. The leaves are more uniformly ovate and the seeds are closer to a circle than an oval. Like psychotria viridis and alba, carthagenensis is a sacred plant in traditional Amazonian religion. Of all three species, psychotria carthagenensis is the most elusive to find in cultivation.
