Description

Passifloras are vines known for their outstandingly gorgeous and fragrant flowers. Actinia is a rare variety that produces a golden-orange edible fruit and can quickly grow to reach thirty feet. It can be grown outdoors but should be kept from experiencing freezing temperatures even though it can tolerate some frost. Inside, it can be grown in a south-facing window. If left outside all year round, the plant should be cut back and the roots covered with mulch to insulate them. Once, established, new plants can be propagated from stem cuttings. Actinia may also be used as a grafting stock for other species of passiflora.

Growing Information: Soak the seeds in warm water for twelve hours prior to germination. Plant seeds at a depth of 1/4″  in well-draining soil. Keep them warm, damp and in filtered sunlight with high humidity. They may also be sown in a moist paper towel or in sterile sand and transplanted after they sprout. Be sure to change the paper towel regularly. Seeds generally take a long time to germinate (1-12 months). Plants should be fertilized monthly from spring through fall.
