Description

Although, typically called, “Fractal Broccoli”, this vegetable is really more of a cauliflower. Both broccoli and cauliflower, along with collard greens, Brussel’s sprouts, kale, cabbage and others, are different forms of the same species, brassica olracea.  Cauliflower is an annual whose name means “cabbage flower” in Latin. The Romanesco variety is also known as Fractal broccoli. It is a specialty Italian variety known for having heads with extraordinarily pronounced fractal shapes. Fractal Broccoli is the perfect combination of an ornamental and an edible plant. It will amaze everyone who sees it and work as a versatile vegetable in the kitchen. Cauliflower is a cruciferous vegetable, and so it has been linked to cancer prevention. It contains allicin, which is reportedly instrumental in heart health and stroke prevention. It is also a significant source of vitamin C, folic acid, fiber and potassium while being low in calories. Additionally, it contains indole-3-carbinol, which can help females regulate estrogen. Kid’s will love growing this plant, and it may just be one way to get them to eat healthy when they might otherwise be reluctant.

Growing Information: Fractal Broccoli should be grown just like any other cauliflower. Plant seeds at a depth of 1/8”. It requires a fertile soil with a good supply of moisture all season long. Optimal germination occurs when the soil temperature is at 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Seeds may be started in pots during the early Spring or sown directly outdoors. A final plant spacing of 18” is ideal with rows that are 2-3 feet apart. Plants will mature in roughly 78 days.
